The following are student representative seats on various councils and committees of the Academic Senate. Student representatives are involved in the enforcement and execution of academic policies and the review and development of policy recommendations on wide variety of academic issues.

Academic Appeals Committee (1)

Acts on undergraduate student petitions for exceptions to University policies.

Meets every other Thursday  2–4 PM

Academic Integrity Committee (1)

To receive requests of students accused of cheating or plagiarism or  requests of faculty accusing specified student(s) of cheating or plagiarism.

Meets on as-needed basis

Advisory Committee on Enrollment Management (1)

A joint faculty and administrative committee charged with the responsibility for advising the President on all matters pertaining to the management of the University’s student enrollment

Campus Climate Committee (3)

Promote mutual acceptance and respect and to celebrate diversity in all its forms.  Performs periodic needs assessments of the campus climate. Recommends specific actions to improve the campus climate. Monitors the campus climate. Encourages, endorses, and participates in University educational programs that promote an increased understanding of equity and diversity issues.

Meets once a month.

Committee on Athletics (4)

Serves as the primary advisory body to the Academic Senate and University administration on matters related to academic policy and philosophy for Athletics. The Director of Athletics reports to the Committee on all changes in the budget, staffing, scheduling, fund-raising, and other matters vital to the conduct of Athletics.

Meets once a month, date and time to be determined.

Curriculum and Educational Policies Council (3)

Reviews, evaluates, and makes recommendations to the Academic Senate regarding all new and existing policies and statements governing graduate and undergraduate curriculum, academic programs, academic standards, and educational policy, and may initiate recommendations for change for the successful implementation of those policies. The Council shall also be responsible for the formation and implementation of policies pertaining to the University's General Education requirements.

Meets 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the Month from 2-4 PM

Faculty Advisory Committee on Technology (FACT) (1)

Advises University bodies involved in the planning, development, implementation, and application of technology campus wide, including the University Library and the Campus Information Technology (CITC), on faculty and student issues related to academic technology.

Meets 3rd Tuesday of the month from 11 AM – 12:15 PM

Grade Appeals Committee (1)

Carries out the grade appeal functions specified in University Policy Statement 99-16, Grade Appeal Procedure.

Meets as needed.

Graduate Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) Committee (1)

Oversees the procedures for the administration of the CSULB WPE.  Approves other examinations that can be used to satisfy the GWAR, and sets minimum passing scores for them. Approves other assessments of academic writing in English connected to upper-division, writing-intensive courses

Meets twice monthly. 1st and 3rd Fridays 1 PM

International Education Committee (2)

Explores and develops the international connections of CSULB.  Encourages links among those with common interests in international affairs or particular global regions and helps sustain their efforts.  Supports the work of the Center for International Education. Fosters the internationalization of the curriculum and encourages international experience among the faculty.

Meets monthly, 1st Friday   11:30 a.m. – 1:30 PM

Learning Assistance Center Advisory Committee (1)

To identify student needs and suggest ways to satisfy them, and to collaborate with LAC staff in responding to those needs.

Meets once per semester

Program Assessment and Review Council (2)

Develops and implements the University's policy on the periodic review of academic programs. Recommends policies on matters related to assessment of University and especially academic programs. Provides advice to University administration on accountability reporting. Periodically reports on graduate accountability. Reviews and makes recommendations regarding proposed changes in the Academic Master Plan.

Meets 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month from 2– 3:30 PM

Teacher Preparation Committee (2)

Advises the Academic Senate and University administration on matters related to policy governing teacher preparation and teaching credentials at the University.

University College Advisory Committee (1)

To review the functioning of programs and provide useful critique and suggestions for enhancements and planning for the future.

University Library Committee Undergraduate Student

(1 undergraduate & 1 graduate student)

Supports and advocates a fundamental role for the library in the intellectual life of the University and works to ensure that library services and collections meet the teaching, research and lifelong learning needs of the University community.

Meets 2nd Friday of each month, 2 – 3:30 PM

University Resources Council (2)

Reviews University financial reports and makes recommendations. Reviews, evaluates, sets priorities where appropriate, and make recommendations on fiscal and business matters and such other support functions as instructional resources, allocation of faculty positions, allocation of space, institutional support budget, athletics budget, and self-support programs

Meets 1st and 3rd Tuesdays from 1– 3 PM

General Education Governing Committee (GEGC) (1)

Responsible for approval and periodic review of individual courses, as well as periodic review of the entire program.

Academic Senate (5)


The Academic Senate of California State University, Long Beach insures effective exercise of the rights, duties, privileges, and responsibilities of citizenship within the University and is the official representative body responsible to and acting for its constituents. It acts as a consultative body to other constituencies on all matters it or the President deems pertinent to the welfare of the University. The Academic Senate structures itself to support the mission of the University and to achieve an optimal degree of communication and cooperation among the elements of the University. Meets evey other Thursday from 2-4 PM in PSY 150.

ATI Steering Committee (1)

Reviews key areas including web-based information and services, instructional technology, accessible instructional material, and electronic and information technology procurement. Its goal is to develop policies and practices that ensure clarity, consistency and operational feasibility.

IT Leadership Committee (1)

Develops the strategic plan for meeting campus information technology goals including information security. Is also responsible for assisting the University Information Security Officer with developing and issuing information security policies, procedures and standards to the campus community.

Campus Planning Committee (2)


Assists the University President in the coordination, development, and control of a long-range plan for the physical development of the campus, within a framework of policy established by the Trustees. Serves in an advisory capacity to related issues.

Enrollment Planning Subcommittee on Student Success (1)

Tracks the progress of implementing the CSU Trustees' Facilitating Graduation Initiatives and related campus efforts to promote student success.

Meets once per month during the academic year

Lottery Committee (1)

Serve as a subcommittee of the University Resources Council and advises the Provost directly on matters related to the allocation of lottery funds.

Meets once per year during the spring semester

Student Fee Advisory Committee (4)


Reviews all fee requests and makes its recommendations to the President’s Office in the case of new fees or fees increased above the approved range.

Meets 4 times a year

Student Health Advisory Committee (4)

Recommends the scope of services, hours of operation, fee-for-service charges, mandatory health fee levels, and annual budgeting. Evaluate alternative revenue sources and periodic independent audits.

Meets once per month during the academic year

University Academic Advising Council (1)

Implements policies approved by the faculty and the administration with the focus on advisement. Examines current advising practices and develops action plans to strengthen the process.

Meets 2nd Thursday of the month at 11 AM

University Academic Advising Council Steering Committee (1)

Sets the agendas and schedules of business for the University Academic Advising Council.

Meets 1st Thursday of each month at 12 PM

Campus Academic Calendar Committee (1)

Review and provide feedback on calendar options for instructional days and workdays; year round operations; etc.
