DESCRIPTIONS

Presidential Cabinet

The Presidential Cabinet assists the A.S. President in carrying out the duties and objectives of the current administration. It consists of Cabinet Secretaries who individually specialize in specific areas of student interest. The Cabinet is supervised by the A.S. President.

Secretary for Academic Affairs (1)

Keeps ASI up to date on proposed changes and developments related to the academic affairs of CSULB. Ensures that all academic committee student seats are filled and that students are attending.

Attends bi-weekly Academic Senate meetings on Thursdays from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Secretary for City Affairs (1)

Serves as the chief liaison between ASI and the City of Long Beach. Attends city council meetings, Chamber of Commerce functions, and other municipal events. Keeps ASI up-to-date on city affairs and their potential impact on students.

Attends weekly meetings of the Long Beach City Council on Tuesdays at 5:00 p.m.

Secretary for Cultural Diversity (1)

Communicates with Multi-Cultural Center, student organizations, and students to promote awareness and appreciation of cultural diversity. Creates and chairs the Cultural Council for the purpose of increase dialogue among students. Plans and executes an annual campus-wide Multi-Cultural Event

Secretary for Internal Affairs (1)

Work on internal campus issues, representing ASI’s perspective in the development, execution, and evaluation of campus services such as  Housing, Parking, Career Development Center, etc

Secretary for LGBTIQ Affairs (1)

Promotes awareness and appreciation of students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersexual or queer to foster a diverse and safe educational environment.  Conducts an annual survey to gauge campus climate.

Attends meetings of the LGBTIQ Council once per month, date and time to be determined.

Secretary for Disability Affairs (1)

Works to foster greater understanding and comfort between disabled students and the campus as a whole by promoting awareness of and equity for students with disabilities. Organizes a Disabled Students Awareness Day to be held in the Spring.

Secretary for System-wide Affairs (1)

Serves as the ASI representative in dealings with CSU Board of Trustees and the Office of the Chancellor. Builds relationships with state legislators representing the Long Beach area. Keeps ASI up-to-date on national and state legislation, CSU policy, and the potential impact of these on students.

Secretary for Women’s Affairs (1)

Works to increase the visibility of and opportunities for the advancement of women. Collaborates with the Women’s Resource Center to promote and plan programs for the student body that raise awareness of issues relevant to women at CSULB.

Meets monthly with the Director of the Women’s Resource Center.

 

 

Other AS Officers

These positions serve the Associated Students and the Executive Branch on specific subject matters.

Attorney General (1)

Serves as the student chief legal counsel of the ASI. Interprets the provisions of ASI bylaws and governing documents. Keeps members of ASI aware of situations that could lead to potential litigation before the A.S. Judiciary.

Government  Elections Officer (1)

Serves as the chief administrative officer of the relations and special elections of the Associated Students. Enforces administrative rules and regulations approved by the Board of Elections. Serves as secretary to the Board of Elections.

Attends monthly meetings of the Board of Elections, date and time to be determined.

Government Recruitment & Training Officer (1)

Recruits students to get involved in ASI. Provides leadership training and development for students to prepare them for future leadership roles in ASI.

Public Defender (1)

Represents students on complaints brought against A.S. to the A.S. Judiciary. Advocates and assists students who may not be familiar with the judicial process. Makes students aware of their rights.

Subsidiary Board Representatives

Subsidiary boards oversee, evaluate, and make recommendations regarding the operations of specific ASI divisions. Typically, these divisions are specialized and benefit from the participation of students majoring in related disciplines and/or student with career aspirations related to the functions of the division.

Child Development Center Board of Trustees Student-at-Large (1)

Serves as a voting member the board that oversees the operation of ASI’s nationally accredited childcare and early education program.

Attends an orientation meeting in June and two meetings per semester thereafter.

Student Media Board Student-at-Large (4)

Serves as a voting member of the board that oversees the operation of ASI student media outlets, including the Union Weekly and K-Beach radio.

Attends meeting on the 2nd Friday of each month at 1:00 p.m.

University Student Union Board of Trustees (1)

Serves as a voting member the board that oversees the operation of the University Student Union, Soroptimist House, and Student Recreation & Wellness Center facilities and programs

Attends meeting of the full board on the 1st Friday of each month at 1:00 p.m.

Attends assigned subcommittee meetings once per month at a date and time determined by the subcommittee.

 

 

Associated Students Judiciary

The A.S. Judiciary is the judicial arm of student government, working on concert with the executive and legislative branches. The Judiciary interprets the provisions of the A.S. Bylaws and other governing documents, renders final decisions in election disputes, and documents its decision on the form of written majority and minority decisions. The Judiciary is also involved in acquiring pro bono legal assistance for CSULB students and publishing an undergraduate law journal.

Associate Justice (3)

Presides over cases, examines evidence, and evaluates testimony. Issues judgments for or against litigants. Writes court opinions.

Court Clerk (1)

Assists the Chief Justice in coordinating and facilitating meetings. Responsible for keeping minutes of all judicial proceedings. Must maintain a minimum of 3 office hours per week.

Associated Students Executive Commissions

The Executive Commissions are agencies that handle specific areas of Associated Students programs and services.

Arts Commissioner (1)

Oversees the commission responsible for integrating fine arts into the campus community.  This includes music programs, recitals, art reviews, shows, etc.

Must maintain a minimum of 3 office hours per week.

Awards & Recognition Commissioner(1)

Oversees the commission responsible for producing periodic President’s Mixers, the annual Advisor of the Year program, and the annual A.S. Awards and Installation Ceremony.

Community Service Commissioner (1)

Oversees the commission that works to improve the relationship between CSULB students and the community at large through various community activities such as blood drives, toys drives, and beach clean-ups.

Must maintain a minimum of 3 office hours per week.

Conservation Commissioner (1)

Oversees the commission that informs students, faculty and staff on current environmental issues affecting our community.  Plans events and activities for the purpose of promoting solutions to environmental problems.

Entertainment Commissioner (1)

Oversees the commission that promotes campus concerts, comedy shows, etc. in venues outside the University Student Union.

Public Relations Commissioner (1)

Oversees the commission that executes public relations activities for the A.S. Executive officers and commissions to maintain a positive image of AS.

Special Events Commissioner (1)

Oversees the commission that plans and executes programs serve current student interests.  Develop programs such as Beach Pride Poolside and Kaleido-Carnival.

Sports and Spirit Commissioner (1)

Oversees the commission responsible for promoting Beach Pride spirit at athletic competitions. Coordinates pep rallies, homecoming events, bus trips and other events.

Must maintain a minimum of 3 office hours per week.

Student Orientation Commissioner (1)

Oversees the commission that works with the SOAR Committee to plan an orientation for entering students.  Coordinate barbeques, entertainment, and organization fairs at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.

Academic Senate Committee and Council Representatives

The following are student representative seats on various councils and committees of the Academic Senate. Student representatives are involved in the enforcement and execution of academic policies and the review and development of policy recommendations on wide variety of academic issues.

Academic Appeals Committee (1)

Acts on undergraduate student petitions for exceptions to University policies.

Academic Integrity Committee (1)

To receive requests of students accused of cheating or plagiarism or  requests of faculty accusing specified student(s) of cheating or plagiarism.

Meets on as-needed basis

Advisory Committee on Enrollment Management (1)

A joint faculty and administrative committee charged with the responsibility for advising the President on all matters pertaining to the management of the University’s student enrollment


Committee on Athletics (4)

Serves as the primary advisory body to the Academic Senate and University administration on matters related to academic policy and philosophy for Athletics. The Director of Athletics reports to the Committee on all changes in the budget, staffing, scheduling, fund-raising, and other matters vital to the conduct of Athletics.

Meets once a month, date and time to be determined.

Curriculum and Educational Policies Council (3)

Reviews, evaluates, and makes recommendations to the Academic Senate regarding all new and existing policies and statements governing graduate and undergraduate curriculum, academic programs, academic standards, and educational policy, and may initiate recommendations for change for the successful implementation of those policies. The Council shall also be responsible for the formation and implementation of policies pertaining to the University's General Education requirements.

Meets 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the Month from 2:00 – 4:00pm

Emergency Committee (1)

Only meets in case of an emergency when the Academic Senate is not in session.

Meets as needed.

Faculty Advisory Committee on Technology (FACT) (1)

Advises University bodies involved in the planning, development, implementation, and application of technology campus wide, including the University Library and the Campus Information Technology (CITC), on faculty and student issues related to academic technology.

Meets 3rd Tuesday of the month from 11:00 am – 12:15 pm

Grade Appeals Committee (1)

Carries out the grade appeal functions specified in University Policy Statement 99-16, Grade Appeal Procedure.

Meets as needed.

Graduate Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) Committee (1)

Oversees the procedures for the administration of the CSULB WPE.  Approves other examinations that can be used to satisfy the GWAR, and sets minimum passing scores for them. Approves other assessments of academic writing in English connected to upper-division, writing-intensive courses

Meets twice monthly. 1st and 3rd Fridays 1pm.

International Education Committee (2)

Explores and develops the international connections of CSULB.  Encourages links among those with common interests in international affairs or particular global regions and helps sustain their efforts.  Supports the work of the Center for International Education. Fosters the internationalization of the curriculum and encourages international experience among the faculty.

Meets monthly, 1st Friday   11:30am – 1:30pm

Learning Assistance Center Advisory Committee (1)

To identify student needs and suggest ways to satisfy them, and to collaborate with LAC staff in responding to those needs.

Meets once per semester

Program Assessment and Review Council (2)

Develops and implements the University's policy on the periodic review of academic programs. Recommends policies on matters related to assessment of University and especially academic programs. Provides advice to University administration on accountability reporting. Periodically reports on graduate accountability. Reviews and makes recommendations regarding proposed changes in the Academic Master Plan.

Meets 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month from 2:00 – 3:30pm

Teacher Preparation Committee (2)

Advises the Academic Senate and University administration on matters related to policy governing teacher preparation and teaching credentials at the University.

University College Advisory Committee (1)

To review the functioning of programs and provide useful critique and suggestions for enhancements and planning for the future.

University Library Committee Undergraduate Student

(1 undergraduate & 1 graduate student)

Supports and advocates a fundamental role for the library in the intellectual life of the University and works to ensure that library services and collections meet the teaching, research and lifelong learning needs of the University community.

Meets 2nd Friday of each month, 2:00 – 3:30pm

University Resources Council (2)

Reviews University financial reports and makes recommendations. Reviews, evaluates, sets priorities where appropriate, and make recommendations on fiscal and business matters and such other support functions as instructional resources, allocation of faculty positions, allocation of space, institutional support budget, athletics budget, and self-support programs

Meets 1st and 3rd Tuesdays from 1:00 – 3:00pm

General Education Governing Committee (GEGC) (1)

Responsible for approval and periodic review of individual courses, as well as periodic review of the entire program.

IT Leadership Committee (1)

Develops the strategic plan for meeting campus information technology goals including information security. Is also responsible for assisting the University Information Security Officer with developing and issuing information security policies, procedures and standards to the campus community.

Campus Planning Committee (2)

Assists the University President in the coordination, development, and control of a long-range plan for the physical development of the campus, within a framework of policy established by the Trustees. Serves in an advisory capacity to related issues.

Enrollment Planning Subcommittee on Student Success (1)

Tracks the progress of implementing the CSU Trustees' Facilitating Graduation Initiatives and related campus efforts to promote student success.

Meets once per month during the academic year

Lottery Committee (1)

Serve as a subcommittee of the University Resources Council and advises the Provost directly on matters related to the allocation of lottery funds.

Meets once per year during the spring semester

Student Fee Advisory Committee (4)

POSITIONS FILLED

Reviews all fee requests and makes its recommendations to the President’s Office in the case of new fees or fees increased above the approved range.

Meets 4 times a year

Student Health Advisory Committee (4)

Recommends the scope of services, hours of operation, fee-for-service charges, mandatory health fee levels, and annual budgeting. Evaluate alternative revenue sources and periodic independent audits.

Meets once per month during the academic year

University Academic Advising Council (1)

Implements policies approved by the faculty and the administration with the focus on advisement. Examines current advising practices and develops action plans to strengthen the process.

Meets 2nd Thursday of the month at 11:00am

University Academic Advising Council Steering Committee (1)

Sets the agendas and schedules of business for the University Academic Advising Council.

Meets 1st Thursday of each month at 12:00pm

Campus Academic Calendar Committee (1)

Review and provide feedback on calendar options for instructional days and workdays; year round operations; etc.
