DACA/Undocumented Student Support & Activism

In an effort to continue standing up for undocumented students on campus and those affected by the rescinding of DACA, ASI is providing a number of resources for students throughout the semester.

“Whether you are an undocumented student or not, this issue affects our classmates, friends, family members, faculty and our entire university as a whole,” said third-year business management major and Lobby Corps Chair Genesis Jara. “When we come together to participate and support by phone banking, it can be truly impactful for undocumented students and those affected by DACA.”

The Commissioner for AB540/Undocumented Students is partnering with the Dream Success Center to host biweekly support groups from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on November 13 and 27. These will be safe spaces for students to learn about resources and ask questions.

October saw a series of phone banks hosted by Lobby Corps, and the ASI Senate that expressed support for the Dream Act of 2017—a bipartisan bill providing a path to citizenship, residence, work permits and more for undocumented immigrants.

The ASI Judiciary recently hosted a legal clinic for students under DACA as well. In upcoming weeks, Lobby Corps will be personally interacting with district legislators to advocate for undocumented students. They can also be found on campus on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. with information about the aforementioned events.

“Students don’t have a choice over where they’re born, and many undocumented students are facing fear of not knowing what their future holds,” Jara said. “They’re trying to pursue a better life for themselves, and I want to do everything in my power to make sure we advocate on their behalf.”
