Lactation Station and Gender-Neutral Restrooms in the USU

Long Beach, Calif. - February 2, 2015 - The University Student Union Board of Trustees (USUBOT) approved a proposal for a lactation station and gender-neutral restroom in the University Student Union (USU) on January 9, 2015. The two restrooms will be provided on the first floor between KBeach radio station and the Beach Auditorium.

The need for a lactation station was brought to the USUBOT's attention when USUBOT Chair, Vanessa Mendoza, visited the President's Commission on the Status of Women to share information about the upcoming USU referendum.

The Commission shared concerns that students were asking their professors to use their offices to breast feed, thus revealing the inadequacy of lactation stations on campus. "This was a great opportunity to address student concerns and make some adjustments before the spring semester started," Mendoza said.

Additionally, the USUBOT had received a concern from a female student sharing her personal experience and lack of station within and around the USU.

Both restrooms underwent renovation during the winter break and are now currently available.
