Essential Piece of the Puzzle

John Jost has been a loyal teammate of ASI since his years as a CSULB student and former executive officer, and continues to create a positive environment for students to feel comfortable during their time attending CSULB.
John recently transferred from his role as facility technician to acting facility maintenance supervisor, and is feeling ready and excited for the challenges ahead. He and his team are always on standby to help with anything maintenance-related for the USU, SRWC, Recycling Center and IPCDC.
Some of the work John and his team puts in may go unnoticed at times, but John says that’s often the goal. For him, the reward is making sure students are able to enjoy their time on campus and feel at home. “It’s nice for students to not have to worry about the stuff we do,” he said. “They walk into the bathroom knowing it’s going to be clean, and they know that our facilities are safe environments.”
As acting facility maintenance supervisor, John oversees a team from all backgrounds. He attributes his ability to successfully manage his team to his efforts to connect with his employees on a personal level, while still being their mentor at work. From helping out his employees with their taxes, to guiding them through work projects, John focuses on small one-on-one connections to develop strong bonds. “I’m here to mentor and coach them, but I know that for many of them, it’s their first time away from home,” he said. “Many of my students don’t have anyone necessarily to lean on—especially the international students.”
It’s clear that John’s love and passion for ASI grows each day. “This is home for me,” John proudly and genuinely stated. “I’ve been here since I attended as a student in 1986, so I don’t need a lot of motivation to take care of my home.”
Fundamentally, John said the he understands that students are under constant stress over academic work, and it’s his pleasure to help them by creating a space where they can feel happy, at ease and at home.
