CHIEF OF STAFF
Matthew Argame
Matthew Argame was raised in Anaheim, California and graduated from Loara High School in 2013. Having two older brothers who graduated from Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) with a bachelor’s of science in nursing, Matthew knew CSULB would be an excellent choice for his undergraduate experience. He matriculated at CSULB in 2013 and is now entering his senior year, where he will complete his pre-medical science coursework and religious studies degree. After he graduates, Matthew hopes to provide health care to diverse and underrepresented communities.
Argame first became involved with ASI during his sophomore year of college where he served in the ASI President’s Cabinet as the Secretary for Academic Affairs. Working in the cabinet provided Matthew with a more holistic definition of diversity. He understands the term diversity to be diverse in itself; ranging in meanings from a diversity of ideas, a diversity of identities and a diversity of cultures.
During Matthew’s junior year, he had the opportunity to explore each of these facets through his extracurricular pursuits. It was through his exploration of diversity of ideas that he founded TEDxCSULB - an organization dedicated to highlighting “ideas worth spreading.” It was while expanding his knowledge on diversity in the scientific workforce that Matthew was selected to be part of the National Institute of Health’s two-year intensive research program, Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD). And it was because of his exploration of diversity through cultures that Matthew made it a point to not only attend various conferences around the country, but to also study abroad in countries like Canada, Italy and England, and this coming winter he hopes to add Cambodia to that list as well.
Matthew has also worked with Project OCEAN (On Campus Emergency Assistance Network) as a peer advocate, where he helped educate the campus community on suicide prevention and positive mental health. Matthew is also conducting research in a clinical neuroscience lab, where he is studying the mental health of the homeless community in Long Beach.
Exploring diversity has made Matthew’s time at CSULB extremely memorable and it was his initial service in the cabinet that sparked his passion and quest to find his understanding of diversity. Matthew is honored to once again serve the student body, now as the leader of the President’s Cabinet as the ASI Chief of Staff and hopes to enrich the experiences of students by making sure they are supported and connected.
