Seniors preparing to graduate walking away from their jobs around campus including ASI. So, as positions open up for new incoming folks, there’s a few ways you can prepare to get involved here at The Beach and interview our organization.
Whether you are searching for your first campus job or hoping to grow your professional experience, working at ASI can be a fantastic opportunity to build skills, make connections and be part of student life at Long Beach State University. (LBSU)
From the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, Beach Shops, ASI at The Beach offers a variety of student assistant positions in communications (marketing, video, social media, strategic communications, graphic design, web design), all faucets journalism at 22West, event planning with Beach Pride Events, recreation, student government and more. If you’re interested in joining the team, here are a few ways to prepare and stand out during the hiring process.
Even if you don’t have 5+ years of work experience, your resume should reflect your strengths. Include class projects, volunteer work, leadership roles, internships or campus involvement that show responsibility and initiative.
Tailor your resume to the position you’re applying for. If the role involves customer service, highlight communication skills. If it’s for marketing or design, display creative experience and technical skills such as making short form videos, writing articles or social media captions, posts on Canva, website design and learning how to create a good atmosphere.
If you’re a first-year student who’s never worked a formal job, make sure you include or mention in your interview that you have transferable skills from extracurricular activities from your high school, your place of worship (if you go), and hobbies. Some of these soft skills include time management, budgeting, event planning, speaking multiple languages, or running a club.
If you’ve haven’t had any experience, don’t fret because you have a lifetime to build these admirable skills.
ASI values students who are engaged in campus life. Joining clubs, attending campus events or volunteering can help you gain experience while showing your interest in the student community.
Employers often look for students who understand campus culture and know how to work with diverse groups of people. Being involved can also help you network with current student employees who may share job openings and advice.
For example, if you want to work at ASI Communications, you can always join organizations such as Comms Club, PRSSA Long Beach, American Marketing Association (AMA), CSULB Film club, and others you can check out through Events & Orgs! Often, these professional development clubs offer ambassador positions to first timers to teach them career orientated skills. Don’t forget every department on campus always needs a strong communications team to reel in high school, transfer and current students to their events!
Student assistant positions can open quickly, especially near graduation season and the start of each semester. Stay updated by checking the ASI work page and other campus employment resources such as the Career Development Center often.
Apply early when positions are posted; many departments review applications on a rolling basis. Waiting too long could mean missing your opportunity.
Once you land an interview, preparation matters. Research the department, understand the role and be ready to explain why you want to work at ASI specifically.
Practice answering common questions like:
- Why do you want this position?
- Why would make you the most suitable candidate?
- How do you handle working under pressure?
- What does teamwork mean to you?
- How would you balance work and school responsibilities?
Hiring managers here at The Beach often want students who are reliable, positive and ready to learn. Show up on time, dress appropriately and communicate clearly during the interview.
Being yourself matters too. ASI looks for students who bring energy, professionalism and a willingness to contribute to the campus community.
Getting hired at ASI is more than just finding a campus job; it’s an opportunity to grow professionally, build long lasting friendships and gain experience that can help shape your future career while sharing a few laughs.
As the cycle goes, students graduate and positions open, now is the perfect time to take that first step. Update your resume, apply with confidence and you might just find yourself starting your next chapter with ASI.
