Long Beach, Calif. - February 14, 2014 - CSU Long Beach Student Journalists Judged alongside the Pros; Earn Golden Mike Award for Best Radio News Public Affairs Program for Daily 49er Radio News - KBEACH's First Golden Mike.
Long Beach, CA - The Radio and Television News Association of Southern California named Daily 49er Radio News on KBeach the Best Radio News Public Affairs Program of 2013, presenting a Golden Mike Award to Producer-Anchor James Delahoussaye, Writer-Anchor Shereen Lisa Dudar, Entertainment Editor Enedina Cisneros, and Sports Contributor Jason Clark. This is the first Golden Mike for KBeach, the student-managed, student- and community-staffed radio station of Associated Students Inc. at California State University, Long Beach.
Daily 49er Radio News is a production of CSULB's student newspaper, The Daily 49er, in collaboration with KBeach. Delahoussaye, Dudar, and Cisneros are multimedia journalists; Clark is the paper's Sports Editor. The half-hour newsmagazine-style program is a mix of campus news, upcoming events, entertainment, sports, opinion features, and in-depth reporting on topics that are top-of-mind for CSULB students, faculty, staff and the wider Long Beach community. The program airs live Wednesdays at 8:00 AM; episodes are available on-demand at the newspaper's website, Daily 49er.com. The episode that earned the Golden Mike aired on September 18, 2013.
It was not easy for Delahoussaye, Dudar, Cisneros and Clark to win the Golden Mike - the awards are among the oldest and most prestigious, rivaled only by the LA Area Emmys (TV only), the regional AP awards and the big national awards: the Peabodys, DuPonts and Edward R. Murrows. The Golden Mikes are one of the very few journalism competitions in which the judges are not only allowed, but encouraged to name no winner if they believe none of the entries rises to the level of award-worthy. This year, no Golden Mike was awarded in one-third of KBEACH's category, Radio Division B (six or fewer full-time news staffers).
The "An Evening With..." series is presented by the University Student Union Program Council and seeks to bring high caliber, educational and entertaining events to CSULB students. Previous events brought out Magic Johnson, Tavis Smiley and George Lopez.
