A subtle golden magic settles over Cal State Long Beach when autumn arrives, or at least, that is what the calendars say. In reality, the season has rolled in with 85-degree heat, cranked-up AC units, and students trying to justify wearing boots when it is still full-blown tank top season outside. Turns out Zara Larsson was right after all: "summer isn't over yet." If you are waiting for a crisp ocean breeze and true sweater weather before getting into the fall spirit, you will be waiting until mid-November. The good news? You do not need a temperature drop to find a little comfort on campus. Autumn at Long Beach State is less about the weather forecast and more about finding those low-key, cozy moments to slow down, recharge, and survive midterm season.
No proper autumn afternoon at The Beach begins without a seasonal drink to set the mood, but nobody is sipping a steaming hot chocolate when lower campus feels like a sauna. Instead, head over to Coastal Coffee at the College of Business (COB) for an iced mocha or an iced vanilla latte to enjoy under the shaded courtyard trees—and keep an eye out for their fall drink specials! If you are nearby, WallStrEAT Cafe sits right next door in the breezeway for a quick caffeine fix between classes. Over on upper campus, you can swing by the Caffeine Lab inside the University Library to grab an iced chai before hitting the books. You get all the comforting seasonal flavors without heat stroke. For more ways to keep both your drinks and food seasonal and weather-friendly, check out the Where to Eat page.
When the afternoon sun starts beating down, finding a cool indoor sanctuary is not just about studying; it is about survival. While the University Student Union (USU) is currently closed for the major Future U renovation project, the University Library on upper campus remains your best study refuge. Skip the bustling entry level and head up to the upper quiet floors or down to the lower subterranean level, where you will find deep rows of book stacks, freezing air conditioning, and sunlit desk corners that invite hours of uninterrupted focus away from the main campus rush. Be sure to take advantage of the study rooms in Peterson Hall 1 (PH1), a hidden gem that many students don't know about. If you need a quick mental reset between lectures, stepping into the quiet, minimalist galleries of the Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum provides a peaceful, air-conditioned sanctuary amidst a busy academic week.
You do not need a cold front to get into the community spirit, as the semester offers plenty of ways to unwind and connect. Browsing through Events & Orgs reveals hundreds of student organizations, including Beach Pride Events (BPE), which keeps the autumn calendar full of seasonal activities. Looking for upcoming fall-inspired events? Don't miss Trunk or Treat at the SRWC or Paint Party with Sustain U! From evening hangouts on the Central Quad as the air finally cools off to dropping into a group fitness session at the SRWC, autumn at Long Beach State is a season to slow down, lean in, and build your own version of cozy right where you are.
