4 Reasons to Vote in ASI Elections

Published: Wednesday, 19 February 2020

They’re finally here – the annual ASI student government elections. With only a couple of weeks until students cast their votes, you might be wondering – why should I vote? We’re here to prove that it’s worth your while.

  1. ASI is by students, for students, and we need YOUR VOTE to keep it that way.
Let’s put it this way – if you don’t vote, your leaders will not reflect your values. If you don't vote, you might see some changes on campus you do not agree with – and you’ll be partially responsible. Vote for the people that speak to your interests and help make a difference.
  2. You can keep your representatives in check.
Let’s face it – students are the main stakeholders that fund ASI. With oversight of the USU, SRWC and most programs and departments that makes up those facilities, ASI’s approximately $18 million budget comes with some incredible responsibilities. If you want to see your fees managed the way YOU want them to be, then be sure to vote for someone who will fight for your interests. Or, better yet, you can be the change you want to see and apply for a position yourself!
  3. Also all the events to get to your candidates involves free stuff.
Nearly all of these events include either free food, free swag or free knowledge.
    • Elections Kickoff Event - USU Southwest Terrace – 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
      Free food, swag and music!
    • Coffee w/ the Candidates #1 – Friendship Walk – March 11, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Hosted by the CSULB Forensics Club
    • VOTING! – Online – March 16 – 18
Ballots will be sent to your CSULB email address
    • Elections Reveal Party – USU 103 (near the USU Games Center) – 12 to 1:30 p.m.
Free food, entertainment, and a celebration of the candidates!
  4. You really can make a difference.
You might think ASI elections have no impact on student life at Long Beach State, but the opposite is true; student government has the power to impact your experience in countless ways. In fact, the ASI Senate was the body that officially disassociated from our old mascot. That same board, though different student leaders, voted to build the USU and SRWC, funded the creation of the Beach Pantry, fights for you in Sacramento and strives to expand resources and access year-round at The Beach. At the end of the day, the people YOU elect will make decisions that will change the direction of LBSU forever.

No matter what direction you want our university to go, we encourage each and every one of you to engage in the democratic process and help bring in the next wave of student leaders. After all, they’ll be working for you!
