Critical Fee Referendum Struck Down By Student Body

Long Beach, Calif. - February 27, 2015- CSULB students voted 67.06% to 32.94% to not increase the Student Body Center (USU) fee $165 per semester. The University Student Union Board of Trustees, student volunteers and staff worked tirelessly on the "It Starts With You" educational campaign to educate students on the importance of this fee increase.

University Student Union Director Dr. Dave Edwards was amazed by the voter turnout, "The end result wasn't what we were hoping for, but I am extremely happy that students had a voice in the process and that CSULB exceeded the national trends in student voter engagement." The national average is 10%.

Associated Students Executive Director Richard Haller echoed Edwards' sentiment, "We are amazed by the turnout and proud of our students for being so engaged."

The special referendum election for the University Student Union fee took place Wednesday, February 25 and Thursday, February 26, with a voter turnout of 11,431 students; 32.94% of the student population.
