Welcome back to the Beach, 49ers! After some much-needed rain greeting us on campus, we’re thrilled to have you back and geared for another rigorous yet satisfying semester.
As you will see in this month’s edition of the BEACHFRONT, we have several can’t-miss events and programs lined up to welcome you back—from getting involved with student organizations during Week of Welcome to celebrating 60 years of ASI serving the students of Cal State Long Beach.
However, as we get moving I want to encourage you all to reinvigorate and revitalize yourselves. Yes, there are many new developments to celebrate and look forward to. But in the midst of celebration, let’s remember that we need to continue pushing forward into the fight before us.
Despite Gov. Jerry Brown’s budget proposal to fund state universities at higher rates than last year, we are still at barely 50% of our request. And in response, CSU trustees are debating raising tuition after a six-year freeze. 49ers, now is not the time for a tuition increase, but rather it’s the time to reprioritize higher education. We are California’s future and the state must invest in our success. I invite each of you to join the fight with us and share your story about how this tuition increase will affect you by clicking the button below.
I also ask that each of you challenge yourself to get involved on campus, to apply to run for the 2017 ASI Student Government elections and to join our efforts to stop this tuition increase.
It’s clear that this is a pivotal time for us as students, for the country and for world. Now is our time to rise to the occasion, to step up, to make our voices heard and to make real change happen. Let’s be those students. Here’s to another strong semester and GO BEACH!
