The Mission of Isabel Patterson Child Development Center

The mission of the Isabel Patterson Child Development Center (IPCDC) is to ensure that no student parent is denied access to higher education due to a lack of affordable childcare. The operation of the Center depends on integrating support from ASI, the California Department of Education, CSULB Division of Student Affairs, the university, CDC parents, and the Long Beach community.

The IPCDC is located at the northwest corner of the campus at 5700 E. Atherton St. The IPCDC includes its central office, three separate children centers, ample parking and play villages accompanied with lush trees, sand, water and wide-open spaces. Each children’s facility was designed from a child’s perspective by renowned architect Frank Sata, a notable architect specializing in early childhood education spaces.

The original facility, established in 1975 through the generous donation of Isabel Patterson, a former Long Beach teacher and LBSU alumna, includes the preschool program, a kitchen and teachers’ office. In 1986, we expanded to include a school-age facility and a central office building. The school-age facility, affectionately known as the “Dome,” is a unique geodesic structure featuring both a ground floor and a loft. The central office building serves as the hub for our administrative staff, including a customer service counter and the offices of the Center’s Director and Associate Director. The newest addition, the Infant Toddler Center, was completed in 1994, further enhancing the IPCDC’s comprehensive care offerings.

The IPCDC at LBSU offers high-quality child development services that empower student parents to focus on their studies. We provide enriching experiences that promote growth, learning and creativity for all children enrolled. Additionally, the IPCDC serves as a valuable resource for the university’s academic programs, the local community and other post-secondary institutions.

Children of student parents are given priority for registration, ensuring that those most in need of our services have access. As availability allows, we also extend our services to children of LBSU staff, faculty, alumni and the broader community.
